Green Corps Crew Leader\
DEPARTMENT:
Workforce FLSA: Seasonal/full time $12.50, June 11- August 31, 2012
SUMMARY:
The Greening of Detroit, is a 501 (c)(3) not for profit organization, established in 1989 to guide and inspire others to create a 'greener' Detroit through planting and educational programs environmental leadership, advocacy, and by building community capacity. To support its’ mission Greening is recruiting leaders for Green Corp Summer Youth Employment Program. Green Corps is The Greening of Detroit's youth employment program designed for high school students living in the city of Detroit. Green Corps members travel around the city caring for over 100 planting sites that The Greening of Detroit has planted. Corps members learn urban forestry and sustainability practices by providing maintenance to trees and engaging conservation projects. Job readiness and financial literacy skills are also obtained throughout the summer.
REPORTS TO: Youth Employment Coordinator
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Crew Leaders co-lead, mentor and facilitate a crew of 10 Detroit youth, ages 15-18, working collaboratively on maintaining green spaces and various conservation service projects designed to build community and environmental stewardship. Projects include park maintenance, habitat restoration, neighborhood green space revitalization, maintaining trees and urban agriculture.
Crew Leaders are also responsible for training the members in conflict resolution, environmental education and assisting in the financial literacy sessions.. All Crew Leaders must attend a mandatory volunteer day June 9th and Crew Leader Development Training June 11-13.
Job Specifications:
• Applicants must be at least 21 years old
• Able to legally work in the US
• Have a valid driver's license and obtain a Chuffers License prier to job offer
• First Aid/CPR certification preferred but not necessary
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
• Experience working with youth or young adults (ages 15-18)
• Experience as a teacher or leader in an educational environment
• Experience with environmental conservation work;
• Passion for the Detroit community.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Must be self-motivated, assertive, and willing to work independently & with others
• Ability to maintain a safe, productive and enjoyable work environment
• Must be willing to adapt to changing working conditions
• Ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds
• Outdoor skills
• Experience working with youth and or children
• Have good communication skills
• Ability to speak Spanish preferred but not necessary
